The Japanese term Ichigo Ichie represents the idea that in each moment, everything we experience is unique, and will never be repeated in the same way again. If we let it slip away without enjoying it, the moment will be lost forever.
Ichigo Ichie does not have an exact translation in English. One interpretation is "once a meeting". Another translation is "In this moment, an opportunity".
Every meeting has a unique essence, and will never be repeated. Perhaps we'll run into the same people or the same place again. but we'll be older, our situation and our humour will be distinct, we'll be carrying the weight of other priorities and other experiences. The universe is in a constant state of flux, and so are we. That's why nothing will ever happen again, in the same way.
Think about a friend, roommate or family member that you speak to almost every day. Yes, you'll probably speak to them tomorrow. But tomorrow you'll have a different set of thoughts and worries on your mind, so will they. The situation around you might be different too. Even though you meet this person every day, the moment you are sharing right now will never repeat.
This is something we all know, but forget as we get caught up in our everyday lives, and think about our worries and obligations. The concept of Ichigo Ichie reminds us that every moment is a precious one.
